Sharing is caring!

I have been a stay at home mom for many years now.

There have been good times and there have been tough times. Living on one salary can be extremely difficult.

I remember some years ago we went through a particularly rough time financially and I wasn’t in a position to go out to work because I was pregnant.

I got out my laptop and I searched and searched for jobs that I could do online.

I came across a ton on horrible scammy jobs and jobs that paid next to nothing.

In the end, I opted to do a little bit of mystery shopping. It paid a little bit of money to cover the cost of some groceries but nothing huge.

Needless to say that I stopped doing it after a short time.

The good news is that these days you don’t have to do horrible jobs like that.

There are real companies out there that can show you how to make REAL money online. I’m not talking about pay your phone bill kind of money but money that can make a real difference to your family.

One of the first jobs that I ever heard about was transcribing and I thought it was a scam.

I kept on seeing jobs on how to become a transcriptionist but I wasn’t convinced.

It was only later on that I began hearing from different people that you could make good money transcribing. I decided to check it out for myself and this is what I discovered.

What is transcribing?

There are different types of transcribing programs that are available.

The first being general transcribing and the second being legal transcribing.

Legal transcribing usually pays more because it is a bit more technical but either one can bring you in a good amount of money each month.

Transcriptionists usually listen to voice recordings and change what was said from audio into text.

It sounds pretty straight forward and to some extent it is but there is also a lot more that goes into it.

You must be the right type of person to be able to do this type of job.

I’ll explain a little more below.

Who is transcribing suited to?

Transcribing can essentially be done by anyone anywhere which is what makes it so great.

There are only a few things that you need in order to get started.

You will need:

    • A laptop/ computer
    • Good typing skills
    • A good grasp on the English language
    • Headset
    • Foot pedal
    • Good internet connection

Who is transcribing not for?

Let’s be real transcribing is not going to be for everyone otherwise it would be a saturated market.

1. If you don’t like working alone and prefer to be amongst the company of others then you might need to look elsewhere.  Your hours transcribing will be spent alone with your headset and laptop.

2. Transcribing is not for you if you won’t have any time at all to transcribe in the quiet.  You need full concentration to be able to hear what is being said on audio.

If you are a parent you will need to have moments in your day where you can fully concentrate.  It could be when the children nap or go to school or in the evenings when the children have gone to bed.

3. Those that don’t have a good eye for detail.  You must have fairly decent grammar and punctuation skills and be able to spot these errors fairly easily in your work.

4. Those that are not disciplined enough to complete tasks in good time.

The benefits of transcribing

1.  The flexibility to work from home

2.  You can do it on your own terms

3.  There are no set amount of work-related hours that you have to stick to each day

4.  You will be self-employed so have full control over how much money you want to earn

5.  The faster you can type the more work you will be able to take on each month and therefore earn

How much can you earn from transcribing?

That is really down to you but generally speaking, general transcribers can hope to make roughly $45,000 annually and legal transcribers $60,000.

I’m sure that amount of money would be life changing in some households.

How do you get started with transcribing?

So far one of the best companies that I have come across for training has been Transcribe Anywhere.

The course is run by Janet Shaughnessy who is a professional transcriptionist and has worked in this field for many years.

Her course will take you from a beginner transcriber to fully professional in as little as 2 – 4 months.

You can take a look at Janets FREE mini course right here, to begin with, if you are still a little unsure if you want to take the plunge just yet.

Final thoughts on how to become a transcriptionist

As with anything that is worthwhile you have to work hard at it in order for it to be a success.  Transcribing is no different to this.

The difficulty with work from home jobs is that people treat them as quick fixes and therefore do not take them as they inevitably fail.

Yes transcribing can help you tremendously in terms of financial stability but if you really want to take things to the next level you will have to work for it.

If you want to know how to become a transcriptionist and are determined to make it work then you can sign up straight away here.

Or you can check out the success stories here from other students who have already taken the course.
